Roe St Student Accommodation

Perth CBD, WA

WA Universal delivered a complex tower crane solution for Roe St Student Accommodation by BUILT, a tight inner-city site requiring fast mobilisation and precision planning. Three tower cranes were established within a nine-day window. Two primary COMANSA CML310 cranes were erected freestanding to 62m, later to be tied and jacked to 84m, while a COMANSA CML190 serviced podium works on complex grillage.

The Challenge

The project site was highly constrained, demanding rapid crane establishment without compromising safety or access. Construction occurs over live rail tunnels, increasing engineering complexity and risk controls. The crane plan required multiple machines operating in proximity, staged height increases, and a specialised foundation/grillage arrangement for the southern crane to service lower podium levels. Speed, precision, and robust methodology were essential to avoid programme delays.

Several large construction cranes operate at a building site in a city, surrounded by tall office buildings under a clear blue sky. Orange safety barriers line the street in the foreground.

Our Approach

We engineered a staged deployment that prioritised safe sequencing and minimal site disruption, establishing three cranes within nine days. Two CML310s were erected freestanding to 62m with a clear plan for later tying and jacking to 84m as the structure rises. For podium servicing, we designed and constructed a complex grillage arrangement for the CML190, ensuring stable operation above sensitive live infrastructure.

The Result

The coordinated multi-crane installation delivered immediate lifting capability across the build while accommodating future height requirements. Three cranes were safely established within the required timeframe, creating strong coverage for core, superstructure, and podium works. The specialised grillage-supported CML190 enabled effective servicing of lower levels, and the planned tie-and-jack pathway for the CML310s supports ongoing vertical progress over live rail tunnels.
